Oral vaccines could be significantly kinder to the environment in a future pandemic.

Oral vaccines that do not depend on “cold-chain” distribution use fewer machines, consume less energy, and produce less waste. This is what Johns Hopkins published in a ground-breaking study across 9 countries, with results showing large potential GHG emissions reductions from the use of oral vs. intramuscular vaccines for mass COVID-19 vaccination programs.

The largest emissions reductions were projected for India and the United States. Up to 82.25 million kg of CO2 could be averted from utilization of an oral vaccine in the US alone, which is equivalent to eliminating 17,700 automobiles from the road for one year.
